Preservation of Vietnam's world heritage sites discussed

The preservation and promotion of World Heritage sites in Vietnam are being discussed at a three-day conference in the former imperial city of Hue.

The conference, the fourth of its kind, was jointly opened on April 11 by the Vietnam UNESCO National Committee, the Ministry of Culture and Information and the Thua Thien-Hue Provincial People's Committee.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation's (UNESCO) strategies and information update on the preservation and development of the world's heritage sites are also among the topics for discussion.

In addition, delegates to the conference will make assessments of Lang Co Beach and Bach Ma National Park, both in Thua Thien-Hue Province, to ask for UNESCO's recognition of the Bach Ma National Park as a biosphere reserve and Lang Co beach as one of the world's most beautiful beaches.

Lang Co beach has dazzling white sand and clear water and remains virtually untouched by tourism. It is seen as one of the most important tourist spots in the province along with the ancient imperial city of Hue, Bach Ma National Park and Hai Van Pass.

The 22,000ha Bach Ma National Park is home not only to 43 species of mammals, nine species of primates, and 330 species of birds but also to at least 1,400 species of flora, which represents around one-fifth of the country's total. Eighty-six of these species are listed as endangered in the Vietnam Red Book.
